This list includes the somatic or diploid (2n) chromosome
number of garden varieties for which counts were published to
mid-1958. The persons making the counts are identified by letter
(L, Longley; R, Randolph; R and M, Randolph and Mitra; S, Simonet).
The ± sign preceding a number indicates that the count
is an approximation, correct to within one or a very few chromosomes
more or less than the recorded number. A very few obiviously
erroneous counts, probably due to misidentification, have been
omitted. Click on the letter below to see those varities displayed
in the window at right.
