250 H, 650 bearded, 150 beardless and 75 varieties of daylilies
Facility: Rainbow Iris Garden is owned and operated by Walter
& Sara Marley, catering to local clientel, ranging from west
of the I-495 Beltway, south/central Maryland, and the panhandle
of West Virginia. The 14 flower beds are of free-form design and
include other perennials and shrubs, besides the irises. Spurias
were introduced to the garden, a couple of years ago and are doing
well.
Open: Wed. - Sat., 10 am to dusk; Sun., 2 pm - dusk; closed on
Mon. & Tues. except by chance or appointment. Mon & Tues
are usually the days we schedule garden clubs, painting groups,
etc. Do call ahead, we'd be glad to visit with you.
Restrooms: private, Johnny-on-the-Spot on occasion.
Directions: Coming from Leesburg, Va. Take Rte.7 west, pick up
9 west, go thru Hillsboro, travel on 9 west (to Charles Town)
and pass Appalachian Deli on right. Go 1-1/2 mi. and take 1st
road on right (Sagle Rd.), Garden is 2nd place on right.
Coming from Charles Town, W. Va., take 9 east, after passing Sweet
Springs 24 hr. Deli (in Va.) on right, proceed about 1 mi. to
Sagle Rd. on left (slow down, youÆre going down hill and
on a curve). Garden is 2nd place on right.
Coming from Frederick, Md., take 340 west, cross the Potomac River
and al- most immediately turn left onto Harper's Ferry Rd. (Amoco
Station on corner), pro- ceed about 4 mi. to Sagle Rd. on right.
Go 2 mi. (gravel road), Garden will on your left.
Restaurants: Picnicing is permitted on the lawn. We have a pond,
so young children must be supervised at ALL times. Other eating
places are in near-by Harper's Ferry, Purcellville or Charles
Town.
Bloom-time: starts in late April with the medians, the TBs peak
is usually the 3rd and 4th week of May, with Siberians, Spurias,
Louisianas and Japanese over- lapping or following.
There is adequate vehicle parking. Buses must park on the side
of the road.
