Early AIS Bulletins

Preserving iris documents and making them available for use is an important part of the HIPS Mission. The following is a brief summary of the contents of AIS Bulletins no. 1-25, which are all available in photocopy at $5.00 each.

1. "The Culture of Irises in the United States." This first bulletin (June 1920) includes culture recommendations from the Committee on Culture, for growing different types of irises in various parts of the U.S. The bulletin concludes with a truly historic list--Charter Members of the American Iris Society. 30 p.

2. "Garden Irises Past and Present." Contributions from writers in Holland, England, France and Australia give this bulletin international scope and offer a history of garden iris development. 45 p.

3. "Sir Michael Foster." The bulk of no. 3 is an appreciation of Foster and his contributions to iris development. 32 p.

4. "Iris Check List." NOW AVAILABLE! The original no. 4, the first iris Checklist issued by AIS; later superseded. A membership list dated Dec. 31, 1921, and formerly sold as Bulletin no. 4, will also be included with orders. 35, 12 p.

5. "Symposium." This was the first Symposium published by AIS, and consisted of iris rankings by a 23 member jury of "capable iris enthusiasts." 33 p.

6. "Description of Varieties, Part I". Detailed description of approx. 100 iris varieties. No. 6 also contains fascinating accounts of John Wister's experiences at the 1922 International Iris Conference in Paris, and his visits to both the Chelsea and Paris Iris Exhibitions. 40 p.

7. "Description of Varieties, Part II." More varieties are described as in Bulletin 6. John Wister continues his interesting saga of "European Visits in 1922," describing visits to the Cayeaux, Vilmorin, Goos & Koenemann, Perry, Wallace, Orphington, Bliss and Hort nurseries and gardens. 40 p.

9. "William Mohr." Contains an appreciation of the recently deceased William Mohr, "Description of Varieties, Part III, " and much information on bulbous irises of all types. 47 p.

10. "Irises for the Beginner." This is truly an "Irises 101" course, dated Jan. 1924. It also contains an index to everything published in previous bulletins. 60 p.
11. "Beardless Irises." Articles by Sir Michael Foster, W.R. Dykes, and R.S. Sturtevant. 39 p.

12. "Notes and Descriptions, Part IV." Continues the "Description of Varieties" series. Mrs. E.A.S. Peckham writes amusingly of an iris collecting trek, and R.S. Sturtevant recounts his iris garden travels for the year. 40 p.

13. "A Classification of Garden Irises." No. 13 also contains memorial material for Frank H. Presby. 35 p.

14. "Bertrand H. Farr." Features memorial material on Bertrand Farr and a history of the AIS' beginnings; financial statements and constitution. Also, the "Official White List" and "Official Black List" of iris varieties! 67 p.

15. This bulletin contains a variety of articles on diverse topics. A sampling: Some Irises of the Future / Sydney B. Mitchell -- Why concentrate on Bearded Irises? / Sherman R. Duffy -- Iris Project at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden / Dr. Geo. M. Reed. 40 p.

16. "A Report on Sterility in Irises." Pod and pollen fertility ratings of 1500 hand pollinations of nearly 200 varieties and types of irises. 43 p.

17. Bulletin 17 has an international flavor, with: Japanese Irises / B. Miyazawa -- White Irises / F. Denis -- Some Irises of Herault / W.R. Dykes Also included: follow-up comments and discussion of the Black List. 43 p.

18. "Records." Includes reports on the 1925 activities and meetings of the AIS; exhibitions and AIS test gardens. 47 p.

19. "W.R. Dykes." The majority of this number is devoted to appreciation and writings of the recently deceased Dykes. Includes a list of his introductions and a bibliography of his copious writings on irises. 39 p.

20. Contains "The Iris of Gerard's Herball / B.Y. Morrison; Problems in Iris Development / J. Marion Shull." Also, a report on iris exhibitions in 1926. 31 p.

21. Includes: Sterility in Apogon and Pogoniris / F.B. Moore, A.B. Stout -- Some of the Best Bearded Irises / G.L. Pilkington -- Planting an Iris Garden / George Dillistone. 43 p.

22. January 1927. Partial contents: Exhibition Policy and Management -- A Report on Sterility in 65 Dwarf Bearded Irises / R.A. Greene, A.B. Stout -- 1926 Activities & Reports. 60 p.

23. April 1927. Highlights: The Future of Iris Breeding / Sydney B. Mitchell -- Everblooming Irises / M. Denis. 52 p.

24. July 1927. Contains iris exhibition reports for 1927, "European Iris Notes 1927" by F. Cleveland Morgan, and the 13th installment of the "Tid-bits" column, miscellanea drawn from AIS members' correspondence. 44 p.

25. "On Early Dwarf Bearded Irises," featuring the writings of R.S. Sturtevant, W.J. Caparne, A.H. Wright. 40 p.
