This iris has grown in our yard since the 30s. It was planted in front of the chicken coop along with "The Blue one." This was known as: "The Red one." It now grows beside the compost pile -- very successfully overcoming our efforts to trash it. It also grows in Cameron Hall's garden and Phil Edinger's California garden -- in both gardens it continues to be labeled the "Lowe Compost iris." It is old, but probably not an iris of the 1800s. It has green foliage bases, mostly green spathe valves, is about 26 inches tall in our garden and blooms mid TB season although this year it went with the earlys. Branching is palida type, but we have never had this iris in a situation where it would grow to capacity. |
