This iris was photographed in J. Owings Rebert's Maryland garden. It is the iris that Clarence Mahan knows as 'Grandmother's Iris.' I did not notice the deeply split style crest while photographing this flower. I don't know if it is natural or something that happened to this particular blossom. I also, alas, did not shoot a print -- a judges' training class was imminent and I didn't have time to run for the print camera. I would guess this flower is from the early to mid 1800s -- it gives me the feeling of a Lémon iris. The fall color varies from reddish to violet depending on the light used to view the slide. The scraggly white hairs at the end of the beard meld into a white line on the fall and appeared this way on all open blossoms. I did not notice purple tinged foliage bases. Does anyone have a clue? |
