Anne and I were in California doing Judges' Training on Historic iris, January 2000. Marilyn Pecoraru brought in a five gallon bucket with a stalk of Avalon Bay and a multitude of stalks of this unknown winterblooming iris. Small flowered, well-branched but 'bunchy' by modern standards, my immediate reaction was: "That has to be something by Vilmorin." It had that classic, 'Vilmorin' look. Marilyn took the pictures shown here in November 1998, when the iris bloomed October through January. In 1999, a warmer year, it started bloom in December and is in bloom (early February 2000) as I write this. |
