This is Jean's antique flattie. It came from Fran Hawks mother's garden in Spokane. It is old, almost certainly a diploid and I was struck with its resemblence to the non-flattie, Edina (Lémon 1840) see below.

Edina (Lémon 1840) It is extremely variable, the fall color goes from medium purple to dark purple, soil dependent. The fall color and patterning 'crawling' up the standards is is also variable, season to season. (All flowers in any given season are similar, but patterning varies season to season)
I speculate that during the course of 160 years many 'accidents' can occur with an unstable cultivar. Jean's flattie bears a closer resemblence to Edina than any other antique iris I have seen or seen photographs of.
