Dear Fellow Irisarian

On behalf of the President and members of the New Zealand Iris Society Inc. I cordially invite you to join us to celebrate our 50 th anniversary. I believe that we have put together an event that will be memorable for all who attend.

Attached is the programme for Symposium 2000 celebrating our first 50 years as an Incorporated Iris Society. We hope that you will find much of interest for you and will join us in November 2000 for a few enjoyable days 'far from the madding crowd." At the time of printing a few minor details are still to be finalized for the programme with a couple of speakers still to confirm. The general outline though will be as printed.

November in New Zealand is the last month of spring and in the Bay of Plenty region where Symposium 2000 is being held mild to warm weather will be experienced. Rain may fall some of the time but this doesn't tend to lower the temperature which, during the day, should be in the late teens early 20s Celsius.

The Symposium is being held in the towns of Mt Maunganui and Tauranga which are either side of a harbour with a bridge joining them. Most accommodation will be in Mt Maunganui in motels all close to the beach. Also in the area is a hot pool complex. The motels and the salt water hot pools are at the end of a peninsular that terminates with an inactive volcano rising 232 meters above sea level. There is a base walk that takes about 45 minutes which is a great way to start the day. There are also tracks leading to the top where a wonderful view awaits the climber. Motel accommodation varies from studio apartments to fully self contained. Prices range from about NZ $95 to $150 per night for one or two persons and some have a second bedroom.

The closest international airport to the Symposium is Auckland. Return flights can be from there or Wellington or Christchurch depending on what post symposium tours you take. If you send us your flight details we will meet you in Auckland and overnight accommodation can be arranged there if you wish. Flight time from Auckland to Tauranga is about 40 minutes. The Auckland members of the society would be delighted to show you the city and area if time permits.

We look forward to meeting and hosting you and sharing experiences. Please bring your photos and slides.
