"The Society was created to help preserve our iris heritageby locating at risk irises and bringing them together with irisarianswho want to grow and perpetuate them. Of equal importance is theestablishment of an extensive collection of reference materialrelating to early iris history. HIPS is the common thread thatbinds together irisarians everywhere.

A membershipin HIPS will offer you much more than two copies of ROOTSeach year. To help you enjoy and learn about our iris history,HIPS sponsors a number of DisplayGardens in various parts of the United States. You can also"see" older iris through the HIPS slide rental program.
For those who enjoy writing and getting letters, participationin a HIPS Robin gives you the opportunity to regularly communicate with other irisarians whose interests are similar to yours.

To assist you in purchasing specific older irises, the HIPSCommercial Source Chairman maintains a large file of catalogs and commercial listings and will attempt to locate a source for the irises you wish to acquire. The HIPSdatabase contains noncommercial sources for more than 4000 irises registered 30 or more years ago. This service can put you in touch with individuals who are willing to provide you with irises that are not commercially available.

Annual sales and auctions sponsored by HIPS give you yet another opportunity to obtain that longed-for antique iris cultivar. Correct identification of iris you have or that you may acquire, greatly increases your pleasure in growing them. HIPS boasts experts who can help you to correctly name that unknown iris from grandmother's yard. To further assist you in iris identification, HIPS offers reprints and xerox copies of early iris reference material. These contain good descriptions of popular irises of yesteryear and are available from the HIPSPublication Sales Office.
